Gust A. Stamatis, 68, U.S. Steel's Lorain Works Retiree

Gust A. Stamatis, age 68 of Amherst Township, died Thursday, May 2, 2002 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following an extended illness.

He was born November 18, 1933 in Lorain and had been a resident of Amherst Township for the past 12 years. Prior to that he had been a resident of Amherst for 30 years.

Mr. Stamatis graduated from Lorain High School and went on to serve with the United States Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

He was employed for thirty years by U.S. Steel's Lorain Works retiring in 1996 from the Caster Lab. He had previously been employed in the Coke Plant.

A member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church; he was extremely active in Serbian fraternal activities serving as past vice president of the church, pastor president of the church choir and past president of St. Nicholas Lodge #66 of the Serbian National Federation.

He was an accomplished bowler who had served as past president of the Saxon Lanes as well as the past president of the Serbian National Federation.

Among his interests, he enjoyed singing, all forms of music, lake fishing, baseball and football.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Sandra (nee Radovich), a son: Gust D. Stamatis of Broadview Heights, daughter: Nadine Tasler of Whitehouse, OH, granddaughters: Rachel and Samantha Tasler and a sister: Marie Pena residing in Vermilion.

He was preceded in death by his father: Angelo G. Stamatis in 1982 and by his mother: Mildred (nee Zunich) in 2001.

Friends may call Friday, May 3, 2002 from 5-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain where a memorial service will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 12:00 noon in the funeral chapel and will be immediately followed by a funeral liturgy in St. George Serbian Orthodox Church (East 33rd and Grove Ave., Lorain). The Rev. Milorad Orlich, pastor of St. George Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.

The family suggests memorial contributions in his name to St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 2210 East 33rd Street, Lorain, Ohio 44055 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
