Joan Erdei, 71, Math Teacher

She was born June 15, 1930 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

She was a graduate of Marygrove College in Detroit, MI where she majored in mathematics and received her teaching degree.

Mrs. Erdei taught math at St. Mary High School in Lorain and sixth, seventh, and eighth grade math at Nativity Catholic School, St. Stanislaus Catholic School and St. Mary Catholic School for 34 years before retiring in 1995.

She was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church where she served as a cantor and lector during mass. She was a member of the Union of Poles in which she was a director and past vice president. She was a member of St. Theresa Br. #40 and was a past secretary.

Mrs. Erdei took voice lessons and was an accomplished singer and sung at many weddings. She enjoyed bowling, bingo, reading and cross-stitch. She was an avid fan of her grandchildren's sports teams and the Cleveland Indians.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Ernest, daughters: Mrs. Rex (Lynn) Miser of Montpelier and Mrs. John (Elaine) Viskup of Elyria; son, Mark J. (Diane) Erdei of Sheffield Lake, 3 grandchildren and sister Loretta Wyneski of Lorain. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Josephine Czarney, brother Mike Czarney and sister Genevieve Czarney.

The family will receive friends, Monday, May 13, 2002, 2-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by a funeral mass at 9:30 a.m. at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 1454 Lexington Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Robert Glepko, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
