Donald M. Barr, 73, Enjoyed Sailing
Donald M. Barr, 73, of Avon, Ohio passed away Sunday May 19, 2002 at CommunityHealth Partners Hospital and Surgical Center, Lorain following a lengthy illness.
He was born April 28, 1929 in Lakewood, Ohio and moved to Avon ten years ago coming from Strongsville. In 1947 he was the State wrestling champion for Lakewood High School and he attended Bowling Green State University on a wrestling scholarship. He was also a champion speed skater at the collegiate level.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was employed in the vending service business before retiring in 1991. He served as Commodore of the Edgewater Marina Boat Club, and was a licensed charter boat captain. He was a member of the National Matthews Boat Club, the American Legion and the Avon United Methodist Church. He enjoyed sailing.
Mr. Barr is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy (nee Eckert); a son, Eric of Avon Lake and two brothers, Jim Barr of North Ridgeville and Dave Barr of Mogadore. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Sarah Barr.
A memorial visitation will be held at the BUSCH-BURMEISTER FAMILY CHAPEL, 32000 Detroit Rd. Avon from 2-4 and 7-9pm Tuesday. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home Wednesday, May 22 at 10:00am. Rev. John Butchko, pastor of Avon United Methodist Church will officiate. Committal services will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon. Cremation by Busch Crematory.
