Angelo R. Cantalano, 92, Owned Angie's Billards
Angelo R. Catalano, 92, of Lorain died Monday, May 20, 2002 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain.He was born September 28, 1909 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
During the Great Depression, he and his father sold fruits and vegetables from a stall at the old Market House on Seventh Street and Broadway until the market closed. In 1937, he worked at American Stove Works as a punch press operator and part-time at the Cue House on Broadway.
In 1940 he opened Angie's Billiards on 5th Street in Lorain which contained four tables. As business thrived he moved to a larger space above the Palace Theater in 1945 and had eight pool tables. In 1952, he was forced to close after fire ravaged the building.
Later he operated a golf driving range on West Erie Avenue and the skating rink on West Erie Ave., before retiring.
Mr. Catalano attended Lorain High School where he played football and basketball. He played softball in Lorain city leagues.
He was a member of ST. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, a life member of Elks Lodge #1301 in which he was a 59 year member and a member of Moose Lodge #552, all of Lorain. He enjoyed fishing and was an accomplished billiards player.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years Elizabeth (nee Balko), son Robert Catalano of Lorain, daughter Loralee Cooke of Louisville, KY, 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents William & Josephine Catalano, brothers Frank, Bill, and Jerome and sisters Lillian, Rose and Christine.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, May 23, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain where funeral services will be held Friday, May 24, 2002 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a 10:00 a.m. funeral mass at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E. Erie Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Chuck Henkle, associate pastor will officiate. Private burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
