Helene N. Kallas, 85, enjoyed gardening & spending time with family

Helene N. Kallas, (nee Kalkas), 85, of Lorain, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Amherst Manor Retirement Community, Amherst following a lengthy illness.

Born July 16, 1916 in Wooster, Ohio. She graduated from Wooster High School I 1933 and attended Wooster College majoring in English and Religion. As a small child, and through high school, Helene helped her father, Nicholas Kalkas, who owned Kalkas Confectionery on Liberty Street in Wooster, do many things including hand dipping chocolates and pulling toffee. After high school, she worked for Zion Lutheran Church, in Wooster as a secretary, until moving to Lorain in 1948. When she cam to Lorain, Helene and her late husband Nickolas, operated the Corigan Cigar Store on Pearl Avenue in Lorain until its closing in 1973. From 1976 until her retirement in 1990, she worked as the secretary for St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lorain.

She was a member in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Lorain, the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society #103, and the Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 Ladies Auxiliary.

She enjoyed gardening, spending time with her family and helping others.

She is survived by her two sons: Christopher, of Amherst and Nicholas of New York, NY, a daughter: Marianne Carvour, of Amherst, 3 grandchildren, a sister: Katie Maskas, of Bedford Lakes, NY.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Nickolas, in 1976, brothers: John, George, sisters: Mary Nickas, Stella Blanc, and Sophie Kalkas.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 30th, from 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where a trisayion service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. The family will also receive friends on Friday, May 31, 2002 from 10:30 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11:00 a.m. in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox, 2000 Tower Blvd., Lorain. Rev. Fr. Demetrios Simeonidis, pastor of St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
