Howard F. Stoneking, 60, US Navy Veteran

Howard F. Stoneking, 60, of Lorain, died Monday June 3, 2002 at the Louis Strokes Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cleveland after a long illness.

He was born December 27, 1941 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident. He attended Lorain High School.

Mr. Stoneking served in the US Navy for over 29 years. His rank was Petty Officer 1st Class. He participated in the Bay of Pigs Invasion and served 13 months in Vietnam aboard the aircraft carrier Intrepid. During his naval career he traveled around the world three times and visited the North and South Pole.

He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Lorain, a member of Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 in which he was a two-time past commander, a member of Mid-Century Masonic Lodge #725 (formerly Charleston Lodge) in which he was a past master mason; a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland and a member of the Al Koran Shriners of Cleveland and the Lorain County Shriners.

He is survived by his mother Virginia Stoneking (nee Webster) of Sheffield Village, sister Lola Smith of Sheffield Village, nephew Phillip Smith of Sheffield Township and nieces Mary Smith Danford and Diane Smith, both of Detroit, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his father Howard W. Stoneking in 1989.

The family will receive friends Wednesday 3-8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain where the Mid-Century Masonic Lodge #725 will conduct Masonic services Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of Lorain providing military honors. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
