Ben J. Poplar, 96, avid bowler and golfer

Ben J. Poplar, 96, of Lorain, died Friday, June 7, 2002 at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home, Lorain, following a short illness.

Born Aug. 11, 1905 in Schenectady, NY, he lived in New Jersey before coming to Lorain 90 years ago.

He worked as an Aero Space Mechanic at N.A.S.A., Brookpark, Ohio, for 28 years retiring in 1967. Prior to that, he worked at Lorain Works US Steel, as a millright, for 15 years.

He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lorain, and the church's Holy Name Society.

He was an avid bowler and golfer. A cowboy and western enthusiast, he enjoyed watching movies and reading stories about them.

Surviving are his sons, Benjamin P. Poplar, of Lorain, Joseph R. Poplar, of Avon Lake, and Richard F. Poplar, of Lorain, a daughter, Mrs. Anne Marie Lehman, of Amherst, 9 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, 1 great great-grandchild, a sister, Agnes Bernosky, of California.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Anna J. (nee Kuowski), his parents, Teofil and Frances (nee Smigle) Popielarczyk, brothers, Robert Poplar, Stanley Poplar, and John J. Poplar, in 1987, sisters, Bess Ziegman, and Helen Ewaneczko.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 10, from 6-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where the Holy Name Society of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church will conduct a rosary service 7:30 p.m. The family will also receive friends on Tuesday, June 11th, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of mass at 10: a.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, E. 28th St., and Elyria Ave., Lorain. Rev. Fr. Kevin Shemuga, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
