Roger E. Doane, 81, WWII Veteran

Roger E. Doane age 81, formerly of Lorain died on Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at Hope Hospice in Ft. Myers Beach, FL following a short illness.

He was born in Lorain on February 3, 1921 and was a 1939 graduate of Lorain High School and a 1948 graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Denver in Colorado. A veteran of WWII Coast Guard and had been Vice president and Treasurer of C.M. Doane Electric Company.

He had been a member of Lorain Port Authority, serving as chairman of the Board of Directors from 1966-1994, Lorain Neighborhood House, serving as president and on the Board of Directors, Mayor's Human Relations Board, Board of Electrical Standards, Cleveland Trust Board of Directors, Lorain Yacht Club, serving as Commodore in 1957, Lorain Sailing Club, as a Board of Directors member, President of Lorain Chamber of Commerce in 1965, President of Lorain Rotary 1972-1973, Inter-Lake Yachting Association General Chairman of Junior Race Week in 1963, volunteered in the Emergency Triage at Healthpark Medical Center in Ft. Myers and was on the Board of Directors for Sandarac II Association.

His hobbies include Star Boat Racing Competition. He was the Great Lakes Star Boat Championship winner, 1967, 1970, and 1971, Bacardi Series -- Daily 1st in Miami Florida in 1965 and competed in the World Championships in Caracas, Venezuela in 1972 as well as several other championships.

Mr. Doane is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara (nee Tyler) Doane, two daughters, Nancy A. Mitchell of Lincoln, NE, and Deborah Schmid of Evanston, IL, son, David E. Doane of Vermilion, OH, 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and brother Albert Doane of Lorain, OH.

He is preceded in death by his parents, C.M. and Olive H. (nee Pancoast) Doane, brothers, Robert P. Doane and Nell M. Doane.

Memorial services will be held on July 13, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Lorain, OH, with Rev. Dr. David E. Wheeler officiating.
