Robert Smith, 74, served with US Marine Corps during Korean War

Robert Smith, 74, of Lorain, died Monday June 17, 2002 in the emergency room at Community Health Partners Hospital & Surgical Center in Lorain after a sudden illness.

He was born December 16, 1928 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident. He was a graduate of Lorain High School.

Mr. Smith served with the US Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He worked at Ohio Edison as a dispatcher for 41 years retiring in 1990.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain where he was an adult server, an Encharistic Minister, a member of the Holy Name Society and had served on the building and ground committee.

He was a member of AMVETS Post #47 in Lorain, the Ohio Edison Men's Club and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #129.

Mr. Smith served as a trustee with the International Association of Lorain and helped with the electrical wiring of the booths for the Lorain International Festival & Bazaar. He also helped with the wiring the booths at the St. Peter Church Festival.

He enjoyed golf and visiting with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Ruth (nee McDermott); daughters; Cynthia Lunghofer of Rhode Island, Susan Gentile of New York and Rebecca Glime of Florida;
Sons Mark Smith of Lorain and Matthew Smith of Arizona; 6 grandchildren and sisters Marilyn Smith and Veronica Smith; both of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Mary (nee Shivak) Smith.

The family will receive friends Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain where the St. Peter Holy Name Society will pray the rosary Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain with military honors.
