Lillian Svete, 92, Accomplished and gifted athlete

Lillian Svete, (nee Carek), age 92, of Huron, and formerly of Lorain died Friday June 28, 2002 at the Kingston of Vermilion following an extended illness. She was born December 13, 1909 in Lorain and had been a resident of the city for the majority of her life.

A 1928 graduate of Lorain High School, she was a parishioner of Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church (Lorain), as well as a member of both the K.S.K.J. Slovenian Fraternal Lodge and the Lakeland Women's Club.

An accomplished and gifted athlete, she was a standout bowler who participated in league competition throughout the city of Lorain; she was also acknowledged as Past Women's City Bowling Champion. She was also highly skilled in the sports of basketball, volleyball, and softball; at one time her basketball team competed against Stella Walsh's Olympic All-Stars in Chicago.

Mrs. Svete in survived by a sons: Leo J. Svete of Lorain, and a daughter: Marilyn L. Ellis of Englewood, Florida, and by Joanne Hupp of Huron, as well as 18 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Leo C. Svete in 1989, by her parents: James and Aloisa (nee Masin) Carek, by a son: John W. Svete in 1999, by a grandson: Paul A. Ellis, and by brothers: Joseph and Frank Carek.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain where a parish rosary services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by her funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church - 1705 East 31st Street - Lorain. The Rev. Paul Krajnik, pastor of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Resurrection Mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery - Lorain.

The family suggests memorials in Mrs. Svete's memory to the charity of the donor's choice.
