Susan Katonak, 101, Accomplished Rose Gardener

Susan Katonak, (nee Kolesar), age 101, of Lorain, died Saturday July 29, 2002 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following a brief illness. She was born January 11, 1901 in Mala Poloma, Czechoslovakia. She has been a resident of Lorain since 1924 coming from her native Europe.

Mrs. Katonak was a charter member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church of Lorain, where she formerly served in the capacity of treasurer on the church board. She was also a member of the Circle One group of the church.

She was an accomplished rose gardener and was proud to have a number of rose bushes, which have remained productive and viable in her yard for more than fifty years. She was also well known for her abilities as a cook and baker specializing in numerous ethnic dishes. Additional interest include embroidery, knitting, crocheting, and sewing.

She is survived by her daughter: Mary Homenik of Avon, 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 1 great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband: George Katonak in 1970, by a daughter: Suzanne Berens in 1999, by her parents: George and Mary (nee Szarnak) Kolesar, as well as a total of 8 brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church - East 33rd and Pearl Avenue - Lorain. The Rev. Laurie Miller, past or of Christ Lutheran Church will preside. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial park - Amherst Township.

The family suggests memorials in Mrs. Katonak's name to either Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church - East 33rd and Pearl Avenue - Lorain, OH 44055 or to New Life Hospice - 5255 North Abbe Road - Elyria, Ohio 44035.
