Richars Allen Ashmus, US Navy Veteran
Richard Ashmus, an officer and a gentleman passed away Thursday July 11, 2002, following a long battle with illness, at New Life Hospice in Lorain, Ohio.Dick graduated from Parma High School in 1937 and was a graduate of Fenn College in 1941 with a degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Pi Sigma Tau fraternity.
He entered the Navy in January 1942 and served in active duty until 1946. He attended Officers training school at Princeton University where he was commissioned as a Lieutenant. He remained on inactive duty until 1959.
His career with the Internal Revenue Service ended in 1980 after 35 years of service. Thirty-one of those years were in Cleveland, four in San Francisco where he retired. He returned to Cleveland where he became office administrator for McCarthy, Lebit, Crystal and Haiman, L.P.A. retiring in 1985.
He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed nothing more than a day on the lake retuning with a creel of fish. He loved traveling, crafting and golf. He was a member of the American Legion, the Eagles Club in Little River, S.C. and was a Methodist.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Joy (nee Hoffner); sons Keith of Bay Village, Lee of Broadview Heights, daughter Cindy Edhart of Cincinnati and step-daughter Allison Hager of Amherst; ten grandchildren; two nephews and former wife, Rita (nee Petti) Ashmus of Broadview Heights.
His parents Louis and Elizabeth, Sister; Jean Painting and Brother Robert Ashmus preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at Old Stone United Methodist Church, 553 South Main St. Amherst, Ohio on Sunday July 14th at 4:00 p.m. with the Rev. Peter Kerlin officiating. Full Military Honor's will be conducted by Members of the Amherst Veteran's Military Honor Guard at the memorial Service.
