Joseph C. Janezic, 83, enjoyed chess, golf, bowling, baseball and playing cards...

Joseph C. Janezic, age 83, of Lorain, died Sunday July 28th, 2002 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following a brief illness. Mr. Janezic was born December 4, 1918 in Lorain, and had been a life-long resident of the city.

He graduated from Lorain High School; he began working in the shipping department at U. S. Steel's Lorain Works and later entered the machinist's apprenticeship program there; following the completion of that four year program, he earned the rating of First Class Machinist. He served in the machine shop at the plant for 41 years retiring in 1980. In the early years of his employment he had also served as a member of the steel plant's volunteer fire department.

A lifetime parishioner of Ss. Cyril & Methodius Slovenian Catholic Church, he served for a number of years as a part time custodian at the church. He was a life member of the church's Holy Name Society and had previously been acknowledged as Parish Man of the Year. A 28-year member of the Legion of Mary, he served for a number of years as that organization's treasurer. He was also a member of the American Fraternal Union.

An accomplished chess master, additional interests included golf, league bowling, baseball, and playing cards. He also enjoyed woodworking and home remodeling projects.

Mr. Janezic is survived by his wife of 60 years: Mary (nee Gergel), daughters: Sr. Rosemary Janezic, S.N.D. currently assigned to the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain, and Barbara Meschke of Avon, 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and a sister: Sophie Lavish residing in Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his son: Frank T. Janezic in 2000, parents: Frank and Theresa (nee Cakada) Janezic, and a brother: Frank "Fritz" Janezic.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church - 1705 East 31st Street - Lorain. The Rev. Patrick Shields, parish administrator of St. Ladislaus Catholic Church in Lorain will serve as the main celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery - Lorain.

The family suggests memorials in his memory to either the St. Peter School Endowment Fund 3601 Oberlin Avenue - Lorain, Ohio 44053, to the Clearview Endowment Fund - 4700 Broadway - Lorain, Ohio 44052, or to the New Life Hospice - 5255 North Abbe Road - Elyria, Ohio 44035.
