Richard P. Callahan, 79, Lorain Catholic Athletic Booster Award Recipient

Richard P. Callahan, 79, of Lorain, died Friday, October 11, 2002 at Community Health Partners Hospital & Surgical Center in Lorain after a short illness.

He was born January 20, 1923 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain resident.

He was a graduate of Lorain High School. During World War II he served with the Merchant Marines.

Mr. Callahan worked at US Steel in Lorain as a clerk in the pipe mill for 33 years retiring in 1991.

He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter and a past member of St. Mary Catholic Church, both of Lorain. He served as a church councilman at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Mr. Callahan was a member of the Lorain St. Mary High School and Lorain Catholic High School Athletic Boosters in which he held various offices and was a past president. Along with his late brother, Robert "Fritz" Callahan, he was honored by the Lorain Catholic Athletic Boosters with the Spartan Award in the year 2000 for their years of dedication and service to Lorain Catholic High School.

Mr. Callahan enjoyed attending the athletic events of his grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughters: Susan Harms of Bowling Green, and Mary Jean Ritter of Tiffin; brother, Harris Callahan of Lorain, 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (nee Bires) in 1993, parents, Louis & Rose (nee Kelly) Callahan and brothers Stanley Callahan, William "Bill" Callahan, Robert "Fritz" Callahan and Terry Callahan.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 15, 2002, 4-8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Wednesday in the funeral chapel at 12:30 p.m. followed by a funeral mass at 1:00 p.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3601 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. The Rev. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
