Bacil H. O'Neal Sr., 83, U.S. Army Veteran

Bacil H. O'Neal, Sr., age 83, of Lorain, died Friday October 18, 2002 at Autumn Aegis Retirement Center following an extended illness. He was born October 15, 1919 in Mount Savage, Maryland and had been a resident of Lorain since 1949 coming from Maryland.

Mr. O'Neal was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving as a tank driver with Company B of the 8th Tank Battalion - 4th Armored Division under the command of General George S. Patton in Europe. Attaining the rank of Sergeant, he saw extensive action in the Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, and participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was employed as a clerk in the shipping department of U.S. Steel's Lorain Works retiring in 1982 after 33 years of service with the company.

Mr. O'Neal was a member of the United Steelworkers Local 1104 as well as the Veteran of Foreign Wars in Mount Savage, Maryland. His hobbies included hunting and camping.

He is survived by daughters; Mrs. Gilles (Carol Lee) Hensley and Mrs. Richards (Susan) Ralich both of Lorain, Mrs. Steve (Debbie) Hall of Sullivan, Mrs. Gary (Patty) Wiseman of Cumberland, Maryland, sons; Robert F. O'Neal of Water Valley, Kentucky, James D. O'Neal of Lorain, and Bacil H. O'Neal, Jr. of Sullivan, 29 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and one great, great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret E. (nee Lilly) O'Neal in 1998, by his parents; Clarence A. O'Neal Sr. and Susie (nee Skipper) O'Neal, granddaughters; Lanette Hall in 1995 and Kim Godles in 2002, by brothers John, James, and Clarence O'Neal, Jr., and by a sister; Zola "Teab" Shriner.

Visitation will be Monday from 3-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 12:00 noon in the funeral chapel with Rev. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the Catholic Church of St. Peter officiating. Burial will follow in Beckly Cemetery in Rochester Township where the Reverend Steve Carmony will preside over the committal rites.
