Steve Spisak, 81, US Army Veteran and Avid Outdoorsman and Sportsman
Steve Spisak, age 81, of Elyria Township, died Saturday November 2, 2002 at his residence following an extended illness.Born April 3, 1921 in Pleasant City, Ohio, Mr. Spisak had been a long-time resident of Elyria Township.
He attended Elyria High School and went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II. Attaining the rank of sergeant, he was attached tot he 76th Field Artillery Battalion and participated in battles throughout central Europe, northern France, the Rhineland, and the Ardennes. He was the recipient of the European-African-Middle-Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, as well as the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the American Campaign Medal. He was currently a member of VFW Post #1079 of Elyria.
Mr. Spisak had been employed as a product development engineer for the Nelson Stud Division of TRW. During his tenure with TRW he earned 26 U.S. Patents; he retired from the company in 1983 following 30 years of service.
He was an active member of Ss. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church in Sheffield Township where he formerly served as an Elder, Trustee, and Financial Secretary.
He was a talented woodworker who especially enjoyed crafting grandfather clocks. He had also completed a variety of projects for his church including building the main altar lectern and numerous other projects in the sacristy.
He was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golf. Additional interests included building and restoring automobiles.
Mr. Spisak is survived by his wife of 54 years; Mary (nee Chocol), daughters; Cynthia M. Klokel of Greenwich, Connecticut, and Louise A. Hall of Elyria, three grandchildren, brother; Paul Spisak residing in Sandusky, sisters; Julia Olah of Lorain, Betty Lovich of Woodstock, Georgia, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; George Spisak, Sr. and Mary (nee Gallo) Spisak, by brothers; George Spisak, Jr., John, Andrew, and Louise, and by sisters; Sue Lester, Mary, Leonard, Mildred Sievert, Helen Queen, and Margaret Mertus.
Visitation will be Monday from 4:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Ss. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church - 1500 Lincoln Boulevard with the Rev. Edgar Anthony, pastor of the church officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park - Amherst Township, where Mullen-Murray Post #451 of the Veteran of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors.
