Helen L. Jones, 78, Enjoyed reading, traveling, sewing, and her grandson

Helen L. Jones (nee Patterson), 78 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away Monday, March 3, 2003 at Allen Memorial Hospital, Oberlin, following a lengthy illness.

Born July 26, 1924 in Lorain, Mrs. Jones moved to Amherst and attended Central School from 1930 to 1935. She returned to Lorain and graduated from Lorain High School with the class of 1942B. She has lived in South Amherst since 1948.

Mrs. Jones was a member of the South Amherst United Methodist Church where she formerly taught Sunday school; and served on various committees; and was a member of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Jones was employed by the South Amherst Local Schools as a Clerk/Treasurer for fourteen years, and was a former member and officer of the Parent Teachers Association and Band Boosters. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scout Troop #458. She was also a past Matron of Stone City Chapter Order of The Eastern Star; a member of the Senior Citizens of Lorain County; The American Association of Retired Persons of Oberlin; and volunteered of the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. She was a precinct worker for the Lorain County Board of Elections. She was a secretary at the Thew Shovel Co.; the Aluminum Company of America; the Cleveland Quarries Co.; and the South Amherst Local Schools. She was also the payroll officer at Sheffield-Sheffield Lake Schools, retiring in 1987 and served as the Secretary and Treasurer for the Alfred Jones Construction Co. Mrs. Jones enjoyed reading, traveling, sewing, and her grandson.

Survivors include her sons Donald M. Jones of South Amherst and Robert A. Jones of Oberlin; one grandson; her brother Jerry Patterson of Carmel, California; her sister Eleanor Rowlette of Sheffield Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Alfred E. Jones on September 9, 2000; by her parents Walter and Grace (nee Simms) Patterson; by her brothers Walter R. and William E. Patterson; and by her sister Betty Kruse.

Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hemple Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. from South Amherst First United Methodist Church; 201 West Main St., South Amherst with the Rev. Gary Lunsford, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
