Albert J. Rangus, 88, World War II Veteran

Albert J. Rangus, 88, of Lorain, died Monday, March 10, 2003 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, after a long illness with cancer. He was born May 18, 1914 in Cleveland and had resided in Lorain since childhood.

Mr. Rangus served with the US Army during World War II as a staff sergeant with 1961st Quartermaster Truck Company Aviation. He was stationed in China, Burma and India and was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.

He worked at US Steel in Lorain as a crane operator for 41 years, retiring in 1975.

He was a member of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Lorain, United Steelworkers Local #1104 and the Senior Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR) of US Steel.

As a youth he played football and softball in Lorain City sandlot leagues. He enjoyed hunting.

He is survived by his daughter Elaine Peterson of Livingston, Montana, son Albert F. Rangus of Lorain, brothers: Louis Rangus and Edward Rangus, both of Lorain, and sister Frances Selemen of Avon Lake. He was preceded in death by his wife Katherine A. Rangus (nee Kata) on May 31, 2002, parents Frank and Fanny Rangus (nee Kimmel) and brothers Joseph Rangus who was killed in action during WWII, Frank Rangus, and Anthony Rangus.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 13, 2003 from 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 9:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 am at St. John Roman Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Dr., Lorain. The Rev. Thomas Smith, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
