Leroy A. "Coonie" Conrad, 84, Craneman
Leroy A. "Coonie" Conrad, 84, of Sheffield died Wednesday, March 12, 2003 after a lingering illness.Born in Sheffield Village in 1918, he was a 1937 graduate of Brookside High School and lived in Sheffield most of his life.
He served as Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army 1942-1946 stationed in Midland and Waco, Texas. He volunteered and was captain on the Sheffield Village Fire Department during the 1950's and 60's and was retired from U.S. Steel, Lorain in 1980 after 43 years as a craneman in the #4 Rolling Mill.
He was an active member of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Sheffield.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, reading, and playing cards with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Winifred "Winnie" (Holbury) in 1997; father, Albert Conrad, mother Florence (Alten) and stepmother Veronica (Gilles).
He is survived by sons, James (Cindi) and Michael (Patti) both of Sheffield; daughters Sandra Martin, Linda (Ronald) Rosso and Kathleen Conrad all of Sheffield, Marian (Ronald) Slovak of Avon and Judith (William) Daniels of Amherst Twp., 16 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and sisters Sr. St. Martha (Thelma) Conrad, S.N.D. of S. Euclid, Geraldine Thome of Elyria and Louise Ann Bruder of Sheffield.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 14th at the Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, 3200 Detroit Road, Avon where a prayer service will take place at 10:15 a.m. Saturday. A Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 1878 Abbe Road, Sheffield. Rev. Robert J. Franco will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Teresa's Cemetery, Sheffield.
