Gilbert Dale Pope, 73, Avid fisherman, enjoyed classical music and reading literary classics

Gilbert Dale Pope, age 73, of Lorain, died Tuesday March 18, 2003 at his residence while under the care of the New Life Hospice following an extended illness. He was born January 5, 1930 in Canton, Ohio.

Mr. Pope spent a number of years as a resident of Lorain County prior to re-locating to south Florida where he secured employment with the International Paper Corporation; he retired as plant manger from Loveshaw International, (I.P.C.'s successor company) in 1997 following 20 years of service; he and his wife returned to Lorain shortly thereafter.

An avid lake fisherman, Mr. Pope's other interests included listening to classical music, as well as reading literary classics written by the likes of William Shakespeare, Henry David Thoreau, and others.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Arlene "Penny" Pope (nee Takacs), a daughter: Pegi Beck of Westlake, sons: Richard E. Pope of Lorain, and Gary G. Pope of Parma, grandchildren: Melissa Pope of Lorain, Valerie Pope of Elyria, Christopher and Erica Beck both of Westlake, two great grandchildren, mother: Edith (nee Bowers) Pope, and a sister: Dorothy Whitteaker of Suisan, California. He was preceded in death by his father: Floyd Pope in 2002.

A private family remembrance service was conducted Saturday in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, Lorain; interment will be at a later date.

The family suggests memorials in his memory to the New Life Hospice, 5255 North Abbe Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035.
