Otto Frank Wentzel, 79, WWII US Army Veteran
Otto F. Wentzel, 79 of Norwalk, formerly of Lorain died on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, OH following a long illness.Mr. Wentzel was born on January 18, 1924 in Berlin, Germany coming to the United States in the late 1920's. Prior to moving to Norwalk in 1997, he had lived in Lorain for 50 years.
He was a veteran of the US Army during WWII. He served as a technician 5th grade in the 168th Field Artillery, Battery B in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and in the Philippine Liberation.
Mr. Wentzel was employed as a railroad engineman for Lake Terminal Railroad. He retired on January 2, 1984 with 38 years service.
While living in Lorain, he was a member of the Euclid Avenue Baptist Church. He was active in youth groups, Christian Boys Brigade and was a volunteer bus driver. He also attended the Fellowship Baptist Church after Euclid Avenue Church closed.
He was also a member of the United Transportation Workers Union, Brotherhood of Locomotive Fireman and Engineman and National Association of Retired & Veteran Railway Employees.
Mr. Wentzel is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia R. (nee Schaefer) Wentzel of Norwalk, son, Allen Wentzel of Lorain, daughters, Judy Bohland and Jeanne Beckler both of Lorain. Other survivors include 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, brothers, Rudy Wentzel of Wadsworth, OH, Richard Wentzel of Strasburg, CO, Willard Wentzel of Tucson, AZ, sisters, Ruth Shipley of Sheffield Lake, OH, Elsie Adams of Clearwater, FL, 6 nieces and 5 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Otto and Wanda (nee Herzke) Wentzel.
There is no visitation and services will be private.
Entombment will be at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon. Military honors will be provided by VFW Post 451 of Lorain.
