Nicholas Matic, 85, Served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Army

Nicholas Matic, age 85, of Lorain, died on Thursday, April 17, 2003 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center West, following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 17, 1917 in Lorain where he has been a lifelong resident.

He was employed at US Steel for a number of years. He was a member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church and also the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps before entering the United States Army in 1941. He was stationed in the Southern Philippines and the Northern Solomon Islands. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 bronze stars, the American Defense Service Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 bronze star and the Good Conduct Ribbon.

He is survived by his sister, Martha Lukesic, of Lorain, niece, Martha Kowalzcyk, of Lorain, and two great nephews and two great great nieces.

H was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Matic in 1956 and Rose (nee Lavish) in 1957 and 3 sisters Mary Evekovich in 1971 and Mildred Matic in 1951 and Lillian Lynch in 2002.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 22, 2003 from 11:00 AM until time of services at 12:00 noon in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, Rev. Milorad Orlich, pastor of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, Lorain, will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
