Peter A. Caserta, 89, Decorated World War II Veteran, including Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts
Peter A. Caserta, 89, of Lorain, died Sunday, April 27, 2003 at Community Health Partners Hospital in Lorain after a long illness.He was born April 26, 1914 in Montenero, Italy and had resided in Lorain most of his life. He was a graduate of Lorain High School Class of 1932B.
Mr. Caserta served with the US Army during World War II as a sergeant in the 96th Infantry in the Philippines and Okinawa. He received the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, First Oak Leaf Cluster, Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, two Bronze Battle Stars, Bronze Arrowhead, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Philippine Defense Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
He worked at US Steel in Lorain as a Draftsman in the Tool and Die Shop for 43 years, retiring in 1977.
Mr. Caserta was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain, where he served as an usher during mass and was a member of the church Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 in Lorain, the Dead-Eyes which is a 96th Infantry reunion group and Senior Friendship of Lorain where he participated in the bowling and golf league. He also enjoyed baseball.
He is survived by his son: Joseph Caserta of Lorain, daughter Joan Caserta of Lorain, sisters Elvira Colella of Vermilion and Carmella DiFilippo of Erie, Pennsylvania and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Yolanda Caserta in 1981, parents Guiseppe and Giovanna (nee DiFilippo) Caserta, sisters Maddalena DiFilippo and Julie Yacobozzi and brother Val Caserta.
Private family services were held Wednesday at the Catholic Church of St. Peter. The Rev. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor, officiated. Entombment followed in the Mausoleum of Calvary Cemetery, in Lorain.
