Norman Otto Polzin, 87, Helped found the Vermilion fish festival, enjoyed boating

Photo of Norman Otto Polzin Norman Otto Polzin, age 87, of Vermilion, died suddenly, Sunday, May 4, 2003 in MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland. He was born October 12, 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio and has been a Vermilion resident since 1948 moving from Sheffield Lake.

He worked as an operator for Cleveland Electric Illumination Co., Avon Lake, retiring 1977. After retirement, he worked at Romps Putt Putt in Vermilion and Will Hahn Builders, Vermilion.

He served in the Civil Conservation Corps at Yosemite National Park. He was a charter member of the Vermilion Lions Club where he served as secretary, trustee, and past president. He was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Humanitarian Award. He was on the founding committee of the Vermilion Fish Festival. He volunteered at the Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels. He was a courier for the Cleveland Eye Bank. He enjoyed boating, perch fishing, woodworking, and stained glass.

He is survived by his daughter, Amber Werner of Vermilion, Ohio, two grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, a niece and his companion, Evelyn Coughlin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice in 1980, a sister Esther Hendricksen, and his parents Otto and Christine (nee Benz) Polzin.

Friends may call Tuesday, May 6, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. The Vermilion Lions Club will conduct a service at 8:30 PM.

Services will be held at the Riddle Funeral Home at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 7, 2003. The Reverend Louis Bertoni, former pastor of the United Church of Christ, Vermilion, will officiate. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
