Eugene R. Griffith, 84, WWII Veteran, enjoyed gardening and being with his family and grandchildren

Eugene R. Griffith, age 84, and a resident of Amherst, passed away, Thursday, May 15, 2003 at Amherst Hospital following a brief illness. He was born March 30, 1919 in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania. He was a resident of Brownhelm and Henrietta for 48 years and has made his home in Amherst since 1962.

Mr. Griffith served in the US Navy during World War II where he received the World War II Victory medal, the American Camp Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon. He was employed for Lorain US Steel for 38 years retiring in 1981 as a mill right. He was associated with Park Ave. United Methodist Church, Amherst. He was a member of the Amherst American Legion Post # 118 and the Amherst V.F.W. Post # 1662. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Martha Griffith (nee Goodwin) his son Donald Griffith of Amherst, his daughter Lois Johnson of Grafton, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, his sisters: Jane Saxe and Pearl Bennett, both of West Brownsville, Pennsylvania, Delores Nicol of California, Betty Dzonko of South Amherst, Joan Davis of Vermilion, Wanda Gutherie of Walton Hills, and Ruth Gugar of North Royalton, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Linda Sue Griffith in 1987, his parents Charles Vere and Daisy May Griffith (nee Robbins), by his great great granddaughter Marissa Salinas in 2002 by his brothers Harry and James Griffith and by his sisters Wilma Lau and Thelma Griffith.

Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 PM at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, Ohio 44001. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 19, 2003 at 1:00 PM from the funeral home. The Rev. Keith Mostad, pastor of Grafton United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
