Harold Clyde Sanner, 80, WWII Veteran, enjoyed ballroom dancing, golfing, and vacations

Harold Clyde Sanner, 80 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Community Health Partners H & S Center, Lorain following a lengthy illness. He was born January 10, 1923 in Fort Hill, Pennsylvania where he was raised. He came to Elyria in 1942 and has been a resident of Amherst for the past 38 years.

He served in the US Air Force during World War II in the European African Middle Eastern Theater where he received the European African Middle Eastern Medal with four bronze stars for combat in Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France, and the Air Offensive over Europe. He also received the Air Medal with one Bronze Cluster and the Unit Citation with one Oak Cluster. Harold served as a gunman and radio operator aboard a B-17 and was a POW for approximately one year in Europe after being shot down. He worked at Ford Motor Corporation, Lorain for 26 years, retiring in 1986 as an electrician. He was a member of the Amherst V.F.W. Post #1662 and the Vermilion Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, golfing, reading westerns, walking, and taking vacations.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-seven years, Rae A. Sanner, son Michael Sanner of Amherst, his daughter Dixie Lyn Sanner of Leesburg, Virginia, four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, his brothers Russell and Dayton Sanner.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ross and Ruth Sanner (nee Sechler) and by his sister Thelma Sanner as an infant.

Friends may call Monday, May 19, 2003 from 3-5 and 7-9 PM at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at 1:30 PM from the funeral home with the Amherst Military Honor Guard performing honors. The Rev. N. James Greenwalt, Amherst will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
