Michael W. "Mickey" Blasko, 80, Enjoyed bowing on leagues and square dancing

Michael W. "Mickey" Blasko, age 80, of Lorain, died Tuesday June 10, 2003 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Blasko was born July 12, 1922 in Campbell, Ohio and had been a resident of Lorain since 1949.

He was a 1940 graduate of Ursuline High School in Youngstown, Ohio and went on to attend Procopius College (now known as Illinois Benedictine College) in Lisle, Illinois). While a student there he participated in both football and baseball at the varsity levels.

He was employed as an accounting supervisor for the Columbia Gas Company of Ohio; he retired in 1982 following 33 years of service.

He was currently a parishioner of both St. Vitus Croatian Catholic Church and the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain. He formerly served as organist and choir director of both St. Vitus as well as Holy Trinity Catholic Church (Lorain).

He was extremely active in Slovak fraternal organizations and was a member of St. Ann's Lodge Branch 114, the National Slovak Society Branch #160, St. John Holy Trinity Lodge Branch #228, as well as the Holy Trinity Altar & Rosary Society. He was also member of the Holy Trinity Name Society where he was honored as its Man of the Year in 1982.

Mr. Blasko was extremely active in civic affairs and was a member of the Lorain Kiwanis Club, as well as a member and former board member of the Lorain Chamber of Commerce.

His hobbies included league bowling and square dancing.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Anastasia "Stacey" (nee Sedlak), sons: Michael of North Royalton, John A. of Wesley Chapel, Florida, and Jerome S. of Lorain, 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and a sister: Mary Skarupa of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Andrew and Katherine (nee Olenick) Blasko, by brothers: Reverend Stephen Blasko, Reverend Andrew Blasko, John, Joseph, and William, and by a sister: Ann Baluch.

Visitation will be Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain where a rosary service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. by members and officers of St. Ann's Lodge, St. John's Lodge, the Holy Trinity Holy Name Society, and the Holy Trinity Altar & Rosary Society. Additionally, a parish rosary will be offered at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Vitus Catholic Church - East 32nd Street and Pearl Avenue. The Reverend Simon Nekie, pastor of the church will officiate. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday in St. John Cemetery - Campbell, Ohio.
