Reverend Chris E. Hughes, 51, Pastor of Tower Baptist Church, enjoyed electronics and scuba diving
Reverend Chris E. Hughes, age 51, of Lorain, died suddenly Saturday, June 14, 2003 at his home after being stricken with an apparent heart attack. Pastor Hughes was born August 6, 1951 in Wichita, Kansas and had been a resident of Lorain since 1974.He attended high school in Wichita where he received All City recognition as a varsity football player. He turned down numerous athletic scholarship offers from major universities choosing, instead, to pursue a career in the ministry. He subsequently graduated from Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri.
Pastor Hughes came to northern Ohio in the early 1970's and served as the Associate Pastor of Faith Baptist Temple in North Ridgeville. In November of 1975 he became the Associate Pastor of Tower Baptist Church in Lorain. He was subsequently elevated to the role of Pastor on June 15, 1977.
Reverend Hughes was a gifted vocalist and a man of many hobbies with a particular fondness for electronics, and computers. He had also recently developed an interest in scuba diving and was only one dive away from becoming a certified scuba diver.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years Peggy (nee Lively), daughters Melissa Brooks and her husband Terry of Lorain, Crystal Bruski and her husband John of Lorain, Mary Markins of Columbus, Ohio, and Becky Taylor, residing in Michigan, grandchildren: Justin Brooks, Alyssa Brooks, Noah Brooks, John Bruski, Jr., James Bruski, and Breanna Bruski, his father Hubert E. Hughes of Strasburg, Colorado, a brother Michael Hughes and his wife Kim of Erie, Colorado, and sisters Virginia Pohlenz and her husband Alvin of Springfield, Missouri, and Linda Davis and her husband Pat of Medinah, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha L. Hughes (nee Gregory) in 1967.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 17, 2003 from 2-9 p.m. in the Tower Baptist Church, 1331 Tower Boulevard, Lorain. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the church with the Reverend Dr. Roy Thompson, Pastor Emeritus of Cleveland Baptist Church in Brooklyn, Ohio officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
