Stanley A. Strnisha, 88, WW II Veteran, enjoyed swimming, diving, and gardening

Photo of Stanley A. Strnisha Stanley A. "Sunnie" Strnisha, age 88, of Lorain, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following an extended illness. Mr. Strnisha was born May 11, 1915 in Marianna, Pennsylvania.

He grew up in Van Vorce, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Lorain since 1951 coming from Lincoln Heights, Pennsylvania.

While residing in Pennsylvania he was employed as a coal minor for a number of mining companies throughout south central and southeastern Pennsylvania for 18 years.

After moving to Lorain he took employment with the United States Steel Company's Lorain Works where he was employed as an electrician for the high level crane gang in the Seamless Mills. He retired in 1980 following 29 years of service with the company.

Mr. Strnisha was a World War II US Army Veteran serving with the Medical Corps at Camp Carson, Colorado from 1942 to 1943.

He was a member of United Steelworkers' Local #1104 as well as the S.N.P.J. Slovenian Fraternal Lodge.

His hobbies included swimming and diving, fishing, and woodworking. Additional interests included vegetable gardening, and caring for fruit trees which adorned his property.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ruth (nee Clark), a daughter Maxine Griffith of Sheffield Lake, a son Max of Amherst Township, 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and sisters Helen Sisul of Lincoln Heights, Pennsylvania, Julia Kinney of Lorain, and Christina Graytok of Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Martin and Julia (nee Zavrl) Strnisha, by his brothers Vincent, Martin, and Max (who died during World War II), a sister Stephania Levkulich and a great granddaughter Carly Wright.

Private funeral services will be conducted Friday in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel with Sr. Rita Costello representing New Life Hospice officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial park in Amherst Township, where members and officers of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans Officiating.

The family suggests memorials in his name to New Life Hospice, 5255 North Abbe Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035.
