William Lachowyn, 72, Served in US Air Force, retired from US Steel in 1982

William Lachowyn of North Bay Village, Florida and former Lorain resident died on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at Mt. Sinai Center in Miami Beach, Florida. He was courageous during his short battle with cancer.

He was born August 16, 1930 in Lorain and graduated in the class of 1948 from Lorain High School. He served our country as a Staff Sgt. in the US Air Force and was stationed in Alaska and was honorably discharged in 1958.

He was with US Steel, Lorain Works as foreman in the electrical department. In 1982 he took early retirement after 34 years of service. During this period he attended Lorain County Community College and furthered his studies at the Elyria School of Electrical Engineering. He was owner and operator of The Lachowyn Electric Company in Lorain. He relocated to Miami, Florida in 1980 where he was associated with the Hyatt Corporation and worked as a director in the engineering department, retiring in 2000.

He was an active member of St. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church during his residence in Lorain, serving in the PTO, building committee, and men's club.

An accomplished musician he played the saxophone and had his own band. He was also a competitive billiards player for years in the Lorain area.

He is survived by his former wife, Doris (nee Szabo) Lachowyn Reynolds of North Palm Beach, Florida, son Christopher of Los Angeles, daughter Andrea Lachowyn, Chryssa Gartner and husband Chuck all of Dublin, Ohio, 5 grandchildren, and 2 brothers, John and Dan Lachowyn.

He was preceded in death by his son William J. Lachowyn in 1965 and his father John Lachowyn Sr., in 1972 and his mother Julia (nee Potoczniak) Lachowyn in 1993.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 21, 2003 from 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, with parastas service at 8:00 p.m. Friends may also call on Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, E. 32nd Street and Gary Avenue, Lorain, Archpriest Basil Stoyka will officiate. Graveside service will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
