Louis John Hyster Sr., 85, WW II Veteran, loved to read and spend time with his family

Louis John Hyster, Sr., 85 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away Friday, July 25, 2003 at Amherst Manor Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.

He was born December 6, 1917 in Lorain and was raised in South Amherst graduating from South Amherst High School in the class of 1936. He has been a lifetime resident of South Amherst.

Louis served in the US Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater where he received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star for his involvement in Battle of the Northern Solomons Islands and the Bronze Star Medal.

He was employed by Ridge Tool in Elyria as a machine repairman. He was a member of Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in South Amherst. He was an active member of Amherst Veterans' Military Honor Guard and a member of the Amherst American Legion Post #118 and the Amherst V.F.W. Post #1662. He served on the South Amherst School Board for many years and volunteered for Harvest for Hunger and Easter Seals. He was a supporter of the Amherst Library and loved reading, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren and family.

Survivors include his son Louis John Hyster, Jr., of Amherst, daughter Robbie Polansky of South Amherst, three grandchildren, and his brothers Ernest Hyster and Alex "Digger" Hyster, both of South Amherst.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Ann Marie Hyster (nee Yuhasz) on April 15, 2003, by his parents Peter Hyster, Sr., and Lizzie Hyster (nee Beres), and by his brother Peter Hyster, Jr., on June 23, 1997.

Friends may call Monday, July 28, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing Prayers will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 a.m. from Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 333 South Lake St., South Amherst. The Amherst Veteran's Military Honor Guard will be performing honors. The Rev. Fr. Denis St. Marie, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
