Dr. George Richmond Huddleston Jr., 81, Accomplished Chemist, WWII Veteran, enjoyed golf, bowling, and gardening

Dr. George Richmond Huddleston, Jr., 81, of Lorain died on Saturday, July 26, 2003 at New Life Hospice Center at St. Joseph following a lengthy illness. He was born on October 7, 1921 in Sandersville, Mississippi.

Dr. Huddleston graduated from Jones County Junior College in Mississippi and Mississippi State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical engineering. He then graduated from Louisiana State University with a Master's Degree and then received a Ph.D. in Chemistry. Dr. Huddleston worked as a chemical engineer and director of research at Copolymer in Baton Rouge, LA. He also worked at BF Goodrich and was a Senior Fellow. He retired in 1986.

His accomplishments while working were numerous polyvinyl chloride patents. He was well respected in his field and was asked to serve as Master of Ceremonies at many business functions due to his charming sense of humor. His expertise in the field of rubber and plastics sent him to England, Germany, Mexico and Venezuela. After his retirement he continued as a consultant with several companies in the plastics industry.

Dr. Huddleston was an avid gardener: he enjoyed casino playing functions, poker, horse racing and dog racing. He played golf in several leagues, enjoyed bowling and loved to travel. He was referred to as a "pied piper" of children.

He was a veteran of the US Navy during WW II serving as an ensign navigator aboard the USS Kleinsmith in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Italian American Veterans, Post 1 of Lorain and the Baton Rouge American Legion. He had served as president of the B F Goodrich retirees, Copolymer Credit Union, Southern Rubber Group and the American Chemical Society.

Dr. Huddleston is survived by his wife of 25 years, Eileen (nee Shaveyco) Huddleston, daughters, Pat Heege of Broadview Heights, Susan Mitock of Lorain, sons, Richard Peters of Lorain, Robert Peters of Elyria, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, brother Frank Huddleston of Jacksonville, FL, sisters, Frances Hinton of Laurel, Mississippi, Peggy Turner of Morgan City, LA. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Opha (nee Griffin) Huddleston, his parents George Richmond Huddleston, Sr., and Pauline (nee Miller) Harrison, sister Christine Hill and brother James Huddleston.

Friends may call at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 30th, 2003 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Amherst Township.
