John J. Bors, 83, US Steel Retiree, WWII Veteran, enjoyed traveling, skiing, and dancing
John J. Bors, 83, of Amherst, died Sunday, July 27, 2003 at Community Health Partners Hospital in Lorain after a lengthy illness.He was born February 23, 1920 in Curtisville, Pennsylvania and had resided in Amherst for the past 10 years moving from Vermilion.
Mr. Bors served with the US Army during World War II as a tank commander in the tank division of General George Patton's 5th Armored Division. He participated in the Normandy invasion.
Mr. Bors worked at US Steel in Lorain for 37 years retiring in 1982.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, Slovak Catholic Sokols, American Slovak Club in Lorain, American Legion Post #12 in Elyria and the Cosmopolitan Dance Club.
Mr. Bors enjoyed traveling, skiing, painting art, coin collecting, stamp collecting, and dancing.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Kimmel-Bors (nee Owens), stepdaughters Edith Dandrea of Lorain and Kyle Herndon of Amherst, 5 grandchildren, sisters Anna Bors, Mary Ann Hentges and Helen Kozloski, all of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Anna (nee Straka) Bors.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 30, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Rev. Lawrence Martello, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
