John R. Shutic, 77, WWII Veteran, aviation enthusiast
John R. Shutic, age 77, of Avon and formerly of Avon Lake, Ohio passed away Saturday, August 9, 2003 at St. John West Shore Hospital, Westlake following a sudden illness.He was born February 25, 1926 in Avon Lake, Ohio where he lived most of his life until moving to Avon in 1995.
He was a 1943 graduate of Avon Lake High School and served in the Army Air Corp. during World War II. John was employed as a Unit/Shift Supervisor for Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company for 42 years and also worked part-time as a Postal Service employee for Avon Lake.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Avon Lake and its Holy Name Society. He was avid aviation enthusiast and a member of E.A.A. (Experimental Aircraft Association) and S.A.R.A.H. (Society of Air Racing Historians) and was a volunteer tour guide at NASA-Glenn Research Center, Cleveland. He also enjoyed his family, gardening and was Avon Lake Shoreman sports fan.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marianne (nee Bonko), four daughters; Judith Mickelson (Carl) of Green, Ohio, Nancy Mastbaum (Blair) of Vandalia, Ohio, Donna M. Gray of Avon and Jennifer M. Graves (Mark) of Hilliard, Ohio, three sons, John B. of Avon, Jeffrey R. (Cindy) of Wakeman, and Patrick J. (Janice) of Perry Township, seven grandchildren, sister Marcella Dlugosz (Alfred) of Avon Lake, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Stella (nee Kish) Shutic, son John, grandson John Patrick Shutic, sister Dorothy Shutic, brother Richard Shutic, and nephew Keith "Chip" Shutic.
Friends may call at the Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, 163 Avon-Belden Road, Avon Lake from 5-9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2003. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph Church, 32929 Lake Road, Avon Lake, on Thursday, August 14 at 10:00 a.m. Fr. James R. Becherer will officiate. Cremation by Busch Crematory. Inurnment will follow mass at Perry Township Cemetery, Perry Township. Memorials may be forwarded to Arden Courts of Westlake, 28400 Center Ridge Road, Westlake, Ohio 44145 on behalf of his wife Marianne.
