Charles Richard Reed, 80, Founded Town Village Ins. in Lorain

Photo of Charles Richard Reed Charles Richard "Charlie" Reed, age 80, of Canton, formerly of Vermilion and Lorain, died Monday, September 1, 2003 at the Canton Regency Retirement Community.

He was born on February 25, 1923 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in Fostoria, Ohio and had lived in Vermilion since the early 1970's. He also lived in Lorain, Mansfield and Freemont. He was a graduate of Fostoria High School Class of 1941. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy having served during the World War II in the Naval Aviation PBY 7th Patrol. Following his military service he was a deep-sea sponge diver in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

He was a licensed insurance and real estate agent and had worked for the National Life Insurance Company, first as an agent, later promoted to District Manager. He was a member of the National Association of Life Underwriters, serving on its Ethics Committee, and also the National Association of Realtors. He also founded Town Village Insurance Company in Lorain and worked for Harbourtown Realty and Lehman Johnson Realty Company, from where he retired.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Vermilion and taught the Adult Bible Study Class. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #397 in Vermilion, the Vermilion Athletic Booster Club, the Vermilion YMCA and the Ritter Public Library.

Survivors include a daughter, Jan Greenfelder of Canton, Ohio, a step-grandson, Jason Greenfelder, brothers Rolph Babb of Fostoria and Ralph Babb of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, sisters Betty Ickes of Thornsville, Ohio and Joann Filliater of Fostoria.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie June Reed, a son, Craig Reed, parents, Guy Wilbert Reed and Betty Jean (nee Sturgess) Reed-Babb and brothers, Gene Reed and hank Babb.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 3, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am. on Thursday, September 4, 2003 at First Baptist Church, 6716 West River Road, Vermilion.

Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the Vermilion Veteran's Council.
