Mary L. Hughes, 74, Enjoyed being with her grandchildren
Mary L. Hughes (nee Whitaker), age 74, of Lorain, died Thursday, September 11, 2003 at her home after a one-year illness.
She was born May 24, 1929 in Scranton, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain for the past 18 years moving from Sheffield Lake. She had also resided in Cleveland.
Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Lorain.
Widowed at the age of 40 she raised her six children on her own. She enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters: Betty Hughes, Carol Hartman, Jane Watchorn and Elida Watchorn, all of Lorain, sons Robert Hughes of Lorain and William Hughes of Milan, 12 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert L. Hughes, parents Edward and Esther (nee Regan) Whittaker, sister Jane Prince and brothers George Whittaker, Jack Whittaker and Donnie Whittaker.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 5-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. A memorial service will be held Monday at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
