Walter J. Pruchnicki, 78, WW II Veteran, enjoyed Cleveland Sports

Walter J. Pruchnicki, Sr., age 78, of Lorain, died early Sunday morning in the Community Health Partners Hospital West in Lorain, following an extended illness.

Born on December 13, 1924 in Lorain, Mr. Pruchnicki was a lifelong area resident. During World War II, he had served in the US Army and had received the American Theatre Ribbon, the EAME Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal of World War II and the Meritorious Unit Award.

He had attended the Victory Baptist Temple in Elyria. He was a member of the American Legion Post #30 in Lorain and the United Steel Workers Union Local #1104 in Lorain. He had enjoyed traveling. He had also enjoyed watching sporting events, especially the Cleveland Brown’s football and Cleveland Indian’s baseball. He had been employed at the Lorain Works US Steel for over 42 years, retiring in 1986.

He is survived by a son, Walter J. Pruchnicki, Jr., of Lorain, daughter Patricia Ann Harris of Lorain, and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Ida M. (nee Jones) Pruchnicki in 1986, his parents Michael and Anna (nee Dzikielewski) Pruchnicki, two brothers George Pruchnicki in 1996 and Leonard Pruchnicki in 1981, and a sister Dorothy Latella in 1989.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria, Ave., Lorain where funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Burial will following in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain, where the American Legion Post #30 of Lorain will conduct graveside military rites.
