Sofia Barba, 84, Enjoyed ballroom dancing and bingo
Sofia Sophie Barba, age 84, of Lorain, died Sunday, September 21, 2003 in the intensive care unit of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following a brief illness.She was born October 1, 1918 in Lagos de Morreno, Jalisco, Mexico and had been a resident of the United States since 1936.
Mrs. Barba was employed in the testing lab at the former National Tube Company during World War II. She was later employed as a waitress at Heilman’s Restaurant in downtown Lorain.
Sophie was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church whose hobbies included ballroom dancing and playing bingo.
Survivors include her son: John B. Torres of Lorain, daughters: Socorro Cuevas and Esther Broadfoot both of Lorain, and Christine Barba-Reynolds of Parkland, Florida, 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, sisters: Guadalupe Barba of Leon, Mexico, and Maria Brambilia-Reyes of Guadalajara, Mexico along with brothers John Barba of Strongsville and Concepcion Barba of Lagos de Morreno.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Esadora (nee Flores) Barba.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 24, 2003 from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by her funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church, 2428 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend David A. Novak, pastor of Holy Trinity Church will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
