Alvin Davidson, 80, World War II Vet

Alvin L. “Cut” Davidson, age 80, of Lorain, died Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Nov. 19, 1922 in Portage, PA. He graduated high school there.

Alvin served in the 791st Military Police Battalion of the U.S. Army during World War II, during the battles and campaigns of Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, and Northern France. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the American Campaign Medal. Following his discharge from the Army, he settled in Cleveland in 1947, living there 7 years before coming to Lorain in 1954.

He worked as a security guard for General Motors Tank Plant in Brookpark, OH, for 23 years, retiring in 1977. After retiring he worked at Sweetbriar Golf Course in Avon for 10 years. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lorain, and enjoyed golfing and camping.

Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Marian M. “Sally” (nee Smerk), a son, Dan of Elyria, daughter, Janet Mckilip, of Lorain, 4 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; a sister, Violet Browser of New Jersey.

He was prededed in death by his parents, John William Davidson and Blanch (nee Ashbaugh) Davidson; brothers Charles, James, Ralph, and John; and sisters Betty Davidson and Mary Warner.

Services were held privately for the family in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Rev. Dr. Linwood Chamberlain, pastor of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lorain, officiated. Burial had followed in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
