Steve Stanik, 88, World War II Veteran

Steve J. Stanik, 88, of Lorain, died Sunday October 5, 2003 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following an extended illness.

He was born December 6, 1914 in Creighton, PA and had been a resident of Lorain since his childhood.

Mr. Stanik attended the Holy Trinity Catholic School and Hawthorne Junior High School. He then went on to work with the Civilian Conservation Corps completing projects throughout the Midwest. In 1943, he was inducted into the United States Army and went on to serve as a Military Policeman attached to Company K of the 273rd Infantry Regiment's 69th Division. He was awarded the American Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Upon returning from military service, he was employed by the Steel Stampings of Lorain, the Lake Terminal Railroad, and the American Shipbuilding Company. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the City of Lorain as a member of the city's lawn bowling field and ice rink.

A parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Lorain, Steve was a member of St. John the Baptist Lodge #228 as well as a member of the Ohio Employee's Retirement System.

He was an accomplished athlete who in his younger days was a member of the St. John the Baptist Lodge baseball team that competed throughout northern Ohio. His hobbies include photography, the outdoors, and sports with a special emphasis on horse racing.

He is survived by a sister, Mary Ann Kelley of Vermilion; nephews, George Knisley of Summerfield, Florida and Franklin Knisley of Elyria; niece Amelia Moldonovan of Vero Beach, Florida; 13 grand nieces and grand nephews, and 1 great grand nephew.

He was preceded inn death by his parents, John and Mary (nee Plechan) Stanik; a sister, Mildred Knisley, and two sisters at infancy.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, in Lorain where a rosary will be recited by Jednota St. John the Baptist Lodge Branch #228 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2428 Elyria Avenue in Lorain. The Reverend David A. Novak, pastor of the church, will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, where officers and members of Mullen-Murray Post #451 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors.
