Robert Scheel, 78, Enjoyed music
Robert E. Scheel, 78, of Amherst passed away Sunday, October 12, 2003 following a one year illness.He was born July 6, 1925 in Lorain, OH and was a resident of Medina for nearly 30 years.
He retired as president of Scheel and Co. Manufacturers and Representatives of Medina, OH. He belonged to the Road Runners Club of Medina, the Westfield Country Club, and the choir of Saint Matthew Lutheran Church of Medina. He helped develop the Reserve residential area in Medina. He served as a Bugle Master in the U.S. Navy during WWII stationed in San Diego, CA, and maintained a lifelong interest of music. He began to play with dance bands: Jimmy Dulio and Others, in the Lorain area at the age of fourteen and continued to play while at Ohio University in Athens, OH where he graduated from in 1950. While at Ohio University, he belonged to the Key Club, J Club, Torch, and served as president of Sigma Chi fraternity. He belonged to the Tara Country Club while living in Bradenton, FL, and the choir of Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Sarasota, FL. Since his retirement to Ohio, he has been active with the Meals on Wheels, the Cooperative Ministry, the Amherst Noon Day Club, and an active member of First Lutheran Evangelical Church in Lorain.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jane G. Scheel (nee Grover); sons, Timothy R., wife Diane and their sons Brandon and Matthew of Medina , John B., wife Sue and their daughters Sarah and Julie of Stratham, N.H.; two sister in laws and two brother in laws, one of who is B. Tad Grover and his wife Ann, beloved cousin Linda Diamond (nee Darrough) and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Alvin J. and Raymond C.; sister Eleanor Leutz; and parents, John and Emma (nee Kiehl) Scheel.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the First Lutheran Evangelical Church of Lorain. The Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., in Amherst has been entrusted with arrangements.
