Gwendolyn S. Anderson, 82, Lifelong Avon Lake Resident

Gwendolyn S. Anderson (nee Beard), age 82, and a lifelong Avon Lake resident, passed away, Monday, October 20 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.

She was born August 8, 1921 in Avon Lake.

Mrs. Anderson was valedictorian of her 1939 graduating class at Avon Lake High School. She then went on to receive her RN from St. Luke’s School of Nursing, Cleveland in 1942. She began her career as an ophthalmologist nurse for Dr. Schwartz, Lakewood, where she worked for 10 years. Following that, she was an orthopedic nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lorain, retiring in 1983.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of Avon Lake United Church of Christ, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Golden Agers. She was also a member of the Lake Shore Woman’s Club, a Girl Scout Troop leader, gardener, pianist, traveler and an avid reader.

She is survived by her daughters: Karen Pfeiffer and Karla Anderson, both of Avon Lake; son Norman E. Marley of North Tonawanda, NY; 6 grandchildren: Kristin, Jordan, Jerry, Chris, Alison, and Casey; brother, Charles L. Beard (Bea); and brother -in- law, Paul Burgess, both of Avon Lake.

Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Norman A. Anderson, who passed away in 1977; sister, Harriet Burgess; a brother, Glen L. Beard; and her parents, Glen L. Beard and Louise (nee Krumwiedge) Beard, and stepfather, William Archibald.

A memorial service will be Saturday, October 25 at the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, 32801 Electric Blvd. in Avon Lake at 11 a.m. Rev. Kelly Peters of the Church will officiate. Interment will be private in Elmhurst Park Cemetery, Avon. Memorials may be fowarded to New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, 3700 Kolbe Road, Lorain, OH 44052. Arrangements are by the Busch-Bermeister Family Chapel.
