Mary A. Tonich, 89, Lifelong Lorain Area Resident
Mary A. Tonich (nee Fundak), 89, of Lorain, died Monday November 3, 2003 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a brief illness.She was born Mary 23, 1914 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
She and he late husband Andrew owned and operated Mary’s Confectionary Store in Lorain for 30 years. During World War II, she was employed at Western Automatic in Elyria as a blue print proofreader and analyzer.
Mrs. Tonich was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lorain and was involved in the Christian Mother’s Club, Euchre Club, Mother’s Card Club and Mother’s Food Bank and various other church groups.
She organized the Small Businesswomen’s Association in the 1950’s. She was a survivor of Polio as a child and was involved throughout her life with early polio awareness. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, cooking and fishing.
She is survived by her daughter Virginia A. Potts of Elyria, sons: Andrew J. Tonich and Thomas N. Tonich, both of Vermilion; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and sister Agnes George of Lorain. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Andrew A. Tonich and brothers Frank Fundak, John Fundak, Steve Fundak, and Paul Fundak.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain where the Parish Rosary will be prayed Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service will be held Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 15th St. & Reid Ave, Lorain. The Rev. David Woost, associate pastor of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain and the Rev. Louis Maldonado, deacon of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lorain will concelebrate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
