Sidney Kalassay, 91, Active in church, accomplished photographer
Sidney Kalassay, age 91, of Lorain, died Tuesday, November 4, 2003 at his residence due to circumstances related to old age. He was born December 31, 1911 in Lorain and had been a resident of the city since 1956 moving from Vincent, Ohio (now known as Sheffield Township).He attended Highland High School (now known as Clearview High School) and went on to secure employment with the United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain Works; he worked as a machinist and retired in 1975 after more than forty-five years of service with the company.
Mr. Kalassay was an extremely active member of the Hungarian Reformed Church where he had served as a member of the Church Consistory for thirty-three years and was later acknowledged as Honorary Consistory Man. He served as the church’s Hungarian Chairperson for two years and as its English Chairperson for a total of seven years. He held the office of Church Treasurer for two years and was President of the Men’s Brotherhood for an additional two years.
Sidney was also a member of the Hungarian Reformed Sick Benefit Society as well as the church credit union where he sat on the board of directors for seventeen yeas, during that time he was named as President for five years and as Vice President for two years.
Mr. Kalassay was an accomplished photographer who also enjoyed dancing.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Stella (nee Butti), daughter Roberta Super of Lorain, three grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and brother Edward, residing in Orlando, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents Louis (Lajos) and Juliana (nee Liptay) Kalassay, brother Louis and sisters: Olga Majoras, Helen Kozmits, and Priscilla Pongracz.
Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 p.m. until the time of funeral services at 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. The Reverend Atilla Veres Kovacs, pastor of the Hungarian Reformed Church will officiate. Private family burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
