Joseph E. "Scrubby" Schrenkel, 80, WWII U.S. Army Veteran

Joseph E. "Scrubby" Schrenkel, age 80, of Lorain, died Thursday November 6, 2003 at the New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph following an extended illness. Mr. Schrenkel was born September 13, 1923 in Lorain and had been a life-long resident of the city.

He was a 1941 graduate of Lorain High School and a World War II Army Veteran where he served as a Sergeant attached to the 18th Radio Security Section. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed as a foreman at Engine Plant #2 of Ford Motor Company's Brookpark complex. He retired in 1972 following eighteen years of service.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman who also enjoyed the game of golf. He was a member of the Lorain County Beagle Club and had formerly raised champion Beagles.

A parishioner of Saint John Roman Catholic Church of Lorain, he was a member of the Lorain Senior Fellowship, as well as Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-six years: Theresa (nee Fantin), a son: John of Amherst, daughters: Diane Oetzel of Austintown, Ohio, Mary Jo Salisbury of Amherst and Theresa Torres of Lorain, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a sister; Bernice Brletic of Vermilion.

He was preceded in death by sons: Al and Joseph, Jr. (both in 1964), by his parents: Albert and Maria (nee Crenicky) Schrenkel, by brothers: Gust, Albert, and John and by sisters: Josephine Miller, Margaret Thomas, Malvina Mucciante, and Mary Darva.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by a celebration of funeral mass at 10 a.m. in Saint John Roman Catholic Church (Grove Avenue and Homewood Drive). The Reverend Thomas Smith, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted by the officers and members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
