Helen Zinitz-Popovich, 93, Co-owner of Maude Elton Tavern, Vermilion

Photo of Helen Zinitz-Popovich Helen Zinitz-Popovich (nee Glowinski), age 93, of Vermilion, died Thursday, November 13, 2003 at the Autumn Aegis Care Center following an extended illness. She was born July 9, 1910 in Lorain and had been a resident of Vermilion for more than twenty years.

Mrs. Popovich, along with her late husband, was co-owner of the Maude Elton Tavern in Vermilion for a number of years. She had previously been employed as a sales associate for Januzzi’s Footwear as well as a clerk for Tony’s Meats.

She was a former parishioner of Saint Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church where she had served as a kitchen volunteer and had most recently attended Saint Mary Catholic Church in her hometown of Vermilion.

Her hobbies included the game of golf and playing cards with a special interest in Pinochle.

She is survived by her son Bernard Zinitz of Lorain, daughters Millie Taliano of Vermilion and Gerrie Milasky of Avon, step daughter Joan Holmes of Vermilion, 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, numerous step grandchildren, great step grandchildren, sister Josephine Morog of Vermilion and a variety of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Bernard J. Zinitz in 1963 and by her second husband Joseph Popovich in 1982, parents Stanislaus and Mary (nee Janocha) Glowinski, sisters Lottie Gorges, Stella Kosakowski, Millie Glowinski, Phyllis Dugan, Jeanette Stephenson, and a brother Ted Glowinski.

Friends may call Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of closing prayers at 10:30 a.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. A funeral mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the Catholic Church of Saint Peter, 3501 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain with the Reverend Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the church presiding. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

The family suggests memorials in her name to either the Saint Peter Church Endowment Fund, 3501 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain, Ohio 44053 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
