Geraldine "Gerry" Slumska, 75, Enjoyed crossword puzzles and bowling
Geraldine Gerry Elizabeth Slumska (nee Urig), 75 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, December 12, 2003 at Community Health Partners H & S Center in Lorain following a lengthy illness.She was born July 17, 1928 in Avon where she was raised and lived until moving to Amherst in 1948.
Gerry was employed by the Amherst City School System for over 20 years as an assistant cook. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst. She was also a Golden Sheath Member of the Hickory Tree Grange where she served as secretary for 25 years. She was also a member of Pomona Grange and the Ohio State Grange and enjoyed crossword puzzles and bowling.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Russell Frederick Slumska, her daughter Kathleen Slack, Linda Bray, Rita Greiner and Edna Canter, all of Amherst, and Sharon Hill of Vermilion, eight grandchildren, two great grandsons, two step grandchildren, four step great grandchildren, her brothers Leroy Urig of Florida and Walter Urig of Elyria, and sister Jean Moran of Avon. She was preceded in death by her parents Leonard and Caroline Urig (nee Guelker), her brother Kenneth Urig and by her sister Elaine Gill.
Friends may call Monday from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst where a Hickory Tree Grange Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Closing prayers will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr. Amherst at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Fr. Joseph Warner, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
