Sylvester Yunker, 90, Enjoyed league bowling and golf
Sylvester Yunker, age 90, of Lorain, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at the New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph, following an extended illness.
He was born April 29, 1913 in Kingston, Michigan and had been a resident of Lorain since 1924.
Mr. Yunker attended the Saint Joseph Parochial School in Lorain and subsequently moved to the Middle Ridge School. He was employed as a foreman for the Duffin Manufacturing Company of Elyria and retired from that firm following more than twenty years of service. He had previously been employed as a machinist for the Western Automatic Corporation of Elyria (predecessor of the Moen Corporation).
He was an active member of the Lorain Senior Fellowship and was also a social member of the Liedertaffel Club and a regular member of the Lorain German Club. He was an avid sports fan who had served for a number of years as a coach in the Lorain Youth Baseball Program. He also participated extensively in league bowling and league golf competitions throughout the area and enjoyed playing cards with friends.
Sylvester is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Mary (nee Nieding), a son Richard of Vermilion, and sisters Dories Wright of Elyria, Geraldine Teaman of Lorain, and Ethel Dumas of Sheffield Township.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agatha (nee Stenger) Yunker, by brothers Jerome and Robert, and by sisters Dolores Elliott and Loretta DeMarco.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 18, 2003 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel. The Reverend Charles Henkle, O.F.M. Conv., associate pastor of Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Lorain, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
