Leonard J. Driver, 85, WW II Veteran, US Steel Retiree

Leonard J. Driver, 85, of Lorain, died Friday, December 19, 2003 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice, following a brief illness.

Born February 26, 1918 in Laeger, West Virginia, he lived in Kentucky before coming to Lorain in 1951.

He served his first enlistment in the US Army during World War II in the 10th Infantry Regiment, of the 802nd Replacement Battalion. He participated in the battles and campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes, having received the American Defense Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Easter Theater ribbon with 5 bronze battle stars and the Bronze Star Medal. His second enlistment in the US Army immediate followed for a total of eight years of service.

Mr. Driver worked for Lorain Works US Steel in the shipping department as a shipper, retiring in 1980 after 29 years of service.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 30, Lorain, and the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104. He enjoyed shopping, walking, and watching wrestling.

Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Marie (nee Hall), sons Ronald of Hickory, North Carolina, and Randle of Lorain, daughters Helen Weaver and Brenda Driver, both of Lorain, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Louise (nee Worrix) Driver, and five brothers and two sisters.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. The American Legion Post 30 of Lorain will conduct full military honors on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
