Donald R. Norberg, 56, U.S. Army Veteran
Donald Robert Norberg, 56 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Sunday, December 21, 2003 at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights following and apparent sudden heart attack.He was born August 13, 1947 in Lorain where he was raised and lived until moving to Amherst. He has been a resident of Amherst for the last 26 years.
Mr. Norberg served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as a Airborne Paratrooper. While in service, he received the National Defense Medal; the Vietnam Campaign Medal; the Air Medal; the Bronze Star; the Combat Infinity Badge; and the Army Commendation Medal. He received his Associates Degree from Lorain Count Community College. Donald was employed by the Oberlin Air Traffic Control for 30 years, retiring in 2001 as an air traffic controller. He also worked part time as a deliveryman for Zelek’s Flower Shop in Lorain. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst and a former Amherst Youth City Association Soccer Coach.
Survivors include his wife of thirty-two years, Marsha Ann Norberg (nee Sophia); sons: Matthew Alan Norberg of Twinsburg, Ohio and Daniel Robert Norberg of Farmington Hills, Michigan; parents: Robert and Kathleen Norberg (nee Francis) of Lorain; his grandson: Brennan Norberg; and his sister: Linda Norberg of North Olmstead.
Friends may call Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing prayers will be held Saturday and 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Lawrence Martello, pastor, will officiate. The Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will perform honors. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
